Kyle Cooper

Who is Kyle Cooper?
He is an American director and designer for film opening title sequences. He went to the Yale school of Art and holds an MFA in graphic design. He started designing at the age of 26, and is now 59 years old and is still designing film title sequences, with his most recent being Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. Kyle Cooper was the co-founder of Imaginary Forces in 1996 which become one of the most successful creative agencies in Hollywood. He then left Imaginary forces in 2003 and founded another creative agency called Prologue. His first opening title sequence design was the Laser man in 1988, and his first most successful movie he designed for was Home alone in 1990. Cooper also owns company called Art of the title: https://www.artofthetitle.com/titles/

What is interesting about this Demo reel?
One similarity that Kyle Cooper's title sequences include is a lot of movement, which keeps the audience interested as it is very visually pleasing to watch, and also keeps the audience engaged in what is being shown so it does not allow the audience to become bored whilst watching, meaning they pay attention to the film/product that is being presented. He also includes the use of animation in his sequences, which allow for more of key aspects of the movie he is directing to be shown without needing to shoot any scenes or travel to certain locations as they can be done on a computer. Animation also adds to the visually interesting aspect of the title sequence, as it is different to usual title sequences, where the opening credits can usually be placed over scenes within the opening of the movie. His opening scenes are usually quite dark and unsettling, unless the movie has a lighter tone in which case the title sequences would be a lot lighter, however he did not do many of these lighter films.

An example of his work - "Spiderman 3"
One of Kyle Cooper's most successful films he designed an opening title sequence for, that I found most exciting to watch, was "Spider-man 3" in 2003. What I found effective of this design was that he used the image and motif of spider webs throughout the opening sequence, and used them to show videos of key moments in the past 2 movies as well as the characters and the actors who played them while their names came up in the credits, which helped remind the audience of the storyline and what has happened previously. Halfway through the opening credits, the webs have a black substance running along them, as well as the webs turning into sand, which indicates the villains of this movie and what creates them, named venom and sandman, as well as giving the movie a darker feel, which is also emphasised by the background of the sequence being very dark, indicating that this movie is not going to be as light as the previous 2. The camera never stopped moving and it was very visually pleasing to watch, this combined with the dramatic orchestral version of the spider-man theme tune, which has been altered to be darker to mach the atmosphere of the film.
